Finca Antigua 2005

  • Area: Spain, LaMancha
  • Grape: Tempranillo
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Rating: Black 82 Dilettante 82
Description: This wine has the typical tempranillo nose of spice, plums and wood. The sweet attack morphs into a vivid, puckery persimmon mouth feel with metallic undertones. Tangy, dry spice finish. The fruit is knocking, but it can't get out. Suitable for cooking and it would probably make a good beef bourgingon. Decanting 40 minutes loosens it up a bit.

Vina Zaco Tempranillo 2006

  • Area: Spain, Rioja
  • Grape: Tempranillo
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Rating: Black 83 Dilettante 81

Description: The best part of this wine is the vanilla perfume nose. Thin and boring flavors of licorice and dark fruit fail to deliver. After 45 minutes in the decanter, the finish went from sharp to chalky. This is a good wine for cooking mushrooms.

Mapema 2005

  • Area: Argentina, Mendoza
  • Grape: Tempranillo
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Rating: Black 89, Dilettante 89
Description: Cherry, wood, blueberry, raisin, coffee and a hit of spice make up the nose. This Tempranillo is brighter than its Spanish counterparts. The taste is much like the nose only a bit spicier with a savory mouth-feel. The medium length finish has good lift. We liked this one. Bodegas Vizcarra Ramos Roble 2006

  • Area: Spain, Ribera Del Duero
  • Grape: Tempranillo
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Rating: Black 88, Dilettante 87

Description: Aged in French Oak for 6 months. The bouquet is made up of vanilla, dark fruits, smoke, spice and a hint of pool liner that we find so common with the Tempranillo grape. The attack is bright and fruity with flavors of dark fruits and juniper berries. Although this has notes of spice, it's not as spice forward as most wines in the same class. It has nice balance although it lacks a low note to pull everything together. This is a lighter style of wine with polished tannins and a moderate finish. Despite the flaws, the Vizcarra is very easy drinking. This may be a good choice as an introduction to Spanish Tempranillos. Decanting required to soften the acidity.

Bodegas Ercavio Tempranillo Roble 2006

  • Area: Spain, Mesa deOcana, Toledo
  • Grape: Tempranillo
  • Alcohol: 13.5%
  • Rating: Black 92, Dilettante 91, Nwjr 90
Description: This purple beauty was aged for 6 months in oak. Lush aromas of blueberry, blackberry, spice and vanilla pamper the nose. Loads of ripe fruit make up the attack and it's soft and juicy in the mouth. Bright and happy flavors of blueberry, dark fruits, spice box, vanilla and a hint of moss dance across the tongue. The finish is incredibly long and oh so dry. This one should evolve in 2-3 years. We see no point in waiting. Just decant it for a few minutes and viola; instant age.

Price: $10
Great wine for a tenner.

Sumarroca Tempranillo 2005

  • Area: Spain, Penedes
  • Grape: Tempranillo
  • Alcohol: 12%
  • Rating: Black 82, Dilettante 82
Description: The leather, smoke, herb and plum nose is the most interesting and complex part of this wine. Watery flavors of dark stewed fruits were overshadowed by too many high notes. Despite its new world brightness, the finish fell flat on its face into a pile of crushed grape seeds. Easy drinking but totally unimpressive. Decant 10 minutes to soften the sharp edges.

Price: $11.99

Tempore Roble 2004

  • Area: Spain, Aragon
  • Grape: tempranillo
  • Alcohol: 13%
  • Rating: Black; 82, spicy food 86 Dilettante; 82, spicy food 86
Description: This is an odd little wine. It's really good with spicy hot food but quite boring on its own. Hot peppers really bring some elements in this wine such as sweet perfume florals, strawberry, spices, vanilla, raisins and sour cherry. Upon opening it's a bit tight and needs a little air.

Food Pairing: Anything that's hot and spicy such as Asian or Tex-Mex.

Torre de Barreda Amigos 2002

  • Area: Spain, Tierra de Castilla
  • Grape: Tempranillo
  • Alcohol: 13.5%
  • Rating: Black; 89 Dilettante; 87

Description: The nose has aromas of black plums, oak, grilled nuts and smoke. The juicy attack is immediately followed by flavors of plum, cherry, spicebox, sundrided tomato. Damp earth and a hint of raisin gives this a really nice low note. It finishes warm and dry.

Food Pairing: veal parmigiana, jambalaya, roast beef

Legaris Crianza 2004

  • Area: Spain, Ribera Del Duero
  • Grape: Tempranillo (Tinta Fina)
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Rating: Black; 81 Dilettante; 80
Description: This one has a very bold nose of blackberry, vanilla, mint with road tar undertones. Straight out of the bottle the attack is hot with a clingy mouth-feel. Flavors of plum, leather and spice are overwhelmed by a strong finish of crushed grape seeds. Although drinkable, it wasn't one of our favorites.

Tamaral Reserva 2001

  • Area: Spain, Ribera del Duero
  • Grape: Old Vine Tempranillo (Tinta Fina)
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Rating: Black; 88 Dilettante; 88
Description: This wine has a deep and rich aroma of smoky wood, nuts, dried fruit with a touch of pool liner. Flavors of chocolate, coffee, dried fruits & nuts with an earthy undertone give this wine serious depth. As it breathes, notes of cherry and pomegranate appear. A juicy mouth-feel lightens the heavier flavors, giving it great balance. The long finish is bone dry with a slightly woody edge. Decanting not required although some light airing adds to the complexity.

Food Pairing: moussaka, grilled lamb
