Canyon's Edge Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

  • Area: Oregon, Horse Heaven Hills
  • Grape: Cab Sauv
  • Alcohol: 13.5%
  • Rating: Black 91 Dilettante 91
Description: Aromas of Balinese incense wafted out of the glass like an offering to the gods. We loved, loved, loved the heady, perfumed nose of tropical flowers, fruits, exotic woods and chalky spice. Rich and complex in the mouth with overtones of florals and cotton candy. The fruit forward attack is filled with bright cherries and mellows into flavors of spice box, raspberries and a hint of pine. It finishes off with a bone dry oakiness. Black said, "It tastes like a warm summer rain." Decanting loosens it up.

Price: $15

Note: We consider this a sipping wine.

  • Area: California, Napa Valley
  • Grape: 95% Cab Sauv, 5% Cab Franc
  • Alcohol: 14.4%
  • Rating: Black 95 Dilettante 94
Description: European in styling and almost black in color, this wine is sublime. It has an intense nose of cigar box, mulberry, pan drippings, earth and saddle leather. Flowers on the attack with a deep richness that's smooth and mellow in the mouth. Flavors of licorice, plum and black currents with just enough brightness and bitterness for a gorgeous understated elegance. Outstanding density, balance and ripeness with a long, heady finish. Decanting not required. Mmmmmm, so so fabulous. I so wish this wasn't the last bottle in the store.

Mitolo Jester 2007

  • Area: Austrailia, Mclaren Vale
  • Grape: Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Alcohol: 14.5%
  • Rating: Black 93 Dilettante 93
Description: The Italian wine maker Mitolo, goes down under and the result is simply great. 20% of the fruit is sun-dried, giving this wine an Amarone flair. Plums, flowers, spice, road tar and a hint of eucalyptus makes for an enticing nose. Concentrated and a little clingy on the palate, this wine is bold without being belligerent. The oh so lively attack is loaded with bright red candied fruits. Lower notes of cherry wood and raisin balance the whole thing out nicely. The extra dry finish has a black licorice twist. Aptly named and so yummy. We'll be sure to pick up a few more bottles. Benefits from a little air. Decanting not required.

Bodega Norton Reserva 2005

  • Area: Argentina, Mendoza
  • Grape: Cab Sauv
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Rating: Black 90 Dilettante 90
Description: Wine Enthusiast reviewed this wine and we both completely agreed with it. Instead of trying to re-invent the wine review, here is what they said:

"Aged in French oak for 12 months. This Cab is simultaneously simple and superb. It offers very nice aromas and pure flavors of berry and cherry. It also folds in some oak-based vanilla and mocha to soften things up. creamy but also structured. A global model for under $20 Cabernet Sauvignon."

I will add here that the attack was pure Old World oaky earth tones of softness. The finish delivered a very pleasant New World brightness. Nice juxtaposition. Decanting not required.

Cousino Macul Antiguas Reservas 2004

  • Area: Chile, Santiago
  • Grape: Cabernet Sauv.
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Rating: Black 85, Dilettante 86, Nwjr 86

Description: This wine has lovely aromas of toast, spice, burnt cherry, wood and black currants. The attack is intense, lightly sweet and fruit forward. Flavors of ripe dark fruits, spice box and just enough earth for a good grounding, are highlighted by enough acidity to make it interesting. The brief finish tastes of cherry pits. This wine is pleasant and nicely harmonized.

A full decant is not required here, but it should be allowed to breath for 10 to 15 minutes.

Price: $13
