Hacienda Molleda Garnacha 2006

  • Area: Spain, Carinena
  • Grape: Garnacha
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Rating: Black 88 Dilettante 87
Description: Aromas of wood, dry leaves, chocolate covered cherries and coffee pave the way for an attack of black fruit and forest floor. Almost syrupy in the mouth and a touch spicy. Decanting this for 30 minutes is a must. It needs time to unflold and the sedement should be filtered.

Price: $13

Note: In the wrong glass, this wine is quite top heavy and tart.

Puerta Bonita G5 2006

  • Area: Spain, Madrid
  • Grape: Garnacha
  • Alcohol: 14.5%
  • Rating: Black 85 Dilettante 86

Description: The blackberry and peppercorn nose is accented by some florals. The attack is very fruit forward with a sweet-n-juicy mouth-feel. Flavors of dark berries, cherries, black pepper and a hint of autumn tones. Totally un-oaked, this wine has a soft, round, lingering finish but no real low notes to reign in the sweet fruit. There really isn't much going on here and we think it's an informal, meatloaf kind of wine. Quite harsh when first opened. After 40 minutes in the decanter, the beast is tamed into submission and the pussy cat emerges.

    Price: $12

Las Rocas Garnacha 2005

  • Area: Spain, Calatayud
  • Grape: Garnacha
  • Alcohol: 14.5%
  • Rating: Black 89, Dilettante 89
Description: Totally un-oaked and velvety soft, this has attractive notes of cherries, damp earth, cardamom, candied ginger, raspberries and a nice pomegranate lift. Fruit forward with a dusky undertone. Decanting not required although it's better with a bit of air. We buy this one often and like it better than its more expensive old vine counterpart.

Price: $11
