Covey Run Gewurztraminer 2007

  • Area: Washington State, Columbia Valley
  • Grape: Gewurztraminer
  • Alcohol: 12%
  • Rating: Black 88 Dilettante 88

Description: Honeysuckle, lychee and citrus on the nose. Nice grapefruit attack that mellows into a white fruit center. Softer than the usual gwertz, it finishes with a good lift and notes of honey drizzled white fruit. At the very end, a gwertz spicyness takes a bow. We liked this one, especially with a hot Panang shrimp.

Price: $8 an excellent deal

Note: Good with hot dishes as it cuts right through a red pepper spice.

Desert Wind Ruah 2005

  • Area: Washington State, Columbia Valley
  • Grape: 45% Merlot, 40% Cab Sauv, 15% Cab Franc
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Rating: Black 93, Dilettante 94
Description: The nose on this wine captivated and fascinated both of us. Scents of dark earth, raspberry, blueberry, wood and vanilla melded into a single, fabulous aroma. Black said, "It gets a 90 for the nose alone." The taste didn't disappoint. Dense flavors of cherry, spice, chocolate, sage, dark roasted coffee beans filled the mouth with lots of old world softness and just enough new world brightess to balance it out beautifully. Lush, ripe and complex with a touch of pecan for an added earthy sweetness. The finish was long and dry with notes of blueberry and herbs. Impressive with and without food. Decanting not required. This was great with spaghetti.
