  • Grape: Merlot
  • Alcohol: 13.5%
  • Rating: Black B+ Dilettante B+

The 2008 was a little different than the 2007.

Price: $10 We will probably buy this again. Inexpensive, tasty wines are welcome in these economic times.

Concha Y Toro Terrunyo Carmenere 2001

  • Area: Chile, Cachapoal Valley
  • Grape: Carmenere, touch of Cab Sauv
  • Alcohol: 13.5%
  • Rating: Black 96 Dilettante 95

Description: The Carmenere grape is one of the most ancient European varieties and was used extensively in Bordeaux. Brought to South America circa 1850, this grape has since found the ideal growing conditions in Chile.

Aged 19 monthis in oak. Unique aromas of smoke, oak, perfumed florals, black fruit and tobacco caress the nose. Lush and seductive in the mouth with a full attack of blueberries, blackberries and spicy toast. There is just enough acidity to compliment its elegant broodiness. The uber-dry finish delivers elements of road tar, tobacco and chocolate. Like the Energizer bunny, the finish keeps going and going and going. We have to buy this yummy beauty again.

Decanting not required although a little air enhances the complexity.

Price: $30 worth every penny.

Food: Great with a steak bordelaise. Would also pair well with rabbit, goose and lamb.

De Martino 2007

  • Area: Chile, Maipo Valley
  • Grape: 50/50 Cab Sauv, Malbec
  • Alcohol: 14%
  • Rating: Black 89 Dilettante 90
Description: This precocious wine has a nose of vanilla, cigarbox, violets, dark fruits, earth and a touch of pomegranate. It attacks with dry blackberries and mellows into a rich and mouth clinging bouquet of dark ripe fruit. The finish is solid with notes of cardamom, grape seeds and a touch of pomegranate. This well balanced wine is good with and without food although the flavors will change. As a sipping wine, we discovered a vibrancy that our dinner of steak and chantrelles muted. Decant 15 minutes. After 1 hr in the decanter, the malbec qualities are more pronounced.

Price: $12

Note: Made with organic grapes.
