Mad Dogs & Englishmen 2006

  • Area: Spain, Jumilla
  • Grape: 60% Monastrell, 30% Cab Sauv, 10% Syrah (shiraz)
  • Alcohol: 13.5%
  • Rating: Black; 86 Dilettante; 86
Description: Perfumed florals with a hint of oak waft out of the glass. This dry wine has lingering flavors of ripe black plums, blackberry, licorice, and a hint of raspberry. Subtle earth tones give it a nice bottom. The finish is satisfying and dry with notes of red fruit. We really liked this one. Decanting not required although 30 minutes makes it even better.

I usually don't buy wine with a silly label or funny name. Why? I'm of the mind that campy attempts at marketing are done to mask a defective product. When it comes to Mad Dogs & Englishmen, this idea falls flat on its face. This was a really good wine.

Food Pairing: grilled raspberry lamb

Note: The blend percentages are different on the 06 vintage than on the 05.
