Sartori Di Verona Amarone Della Valpolicella 2004

  • Area: Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella
  • Grape: 50% Corvina Veronese, 40% Rondinella, 10% Molinara
  • Alcohol: 14.5%
  • Rating: Black; 94 Dilettante; 94 NWJR; 93

Description: The grapes are dried on wooden racks for 100 days and aged for 3 years in Slavonian oak casks. The color is deep black with a dark cherry rim. This unfiltered wine has an amazing nose that's raisiny, lush and liquor/port like. On the palate it has beautifully orchestrated dark undertones and bright highlights. Flavors of cherry, raisins, spice, and pepper blend into a lively mix. This wine is about opposites; sweet and dry, bright and dark. It has a fabulously clean finish of red fruit with a peppery burr. We didn't decant this one. As it breathed in the glass, nuances of oak and earth revealed themselves while the high notes remained intact. Descriptive words that kept coming up during the tasting were; aristocratic, lush, rich.

Price: $40

Food Pairing: Steak with peppercorns and exotic meats such as bear or venison
